Serpentine Curves class

Here are some pictures from my class.
First there was a lot of cutting out ..

Then a lot of arranging.
Half blocks were stitched together and more arrangements of designs made...

Soon a variety of ideas were emerging!

I do love it when the students develop ideas that the teacher hasn't yet tried!!
Aren't these just wonderful?

New fabric

I came home after my week of grandmothering and quilt retreat to find a lovely parcel from Hancocks.. all excellent quality fabrics in soft modern colours and only $3.99 a yard!
I really ike the feature fabric with the birds printed on it and the soft grey print is just beautiful: coincidentally I saw an interesting hexagon quilt in these fabrics this afternoon on Pinterest.





And here is what I was working on at Quilt retreat:
another version of my Serpentine Curves quilt in Oakshott Autumn Colour Pack.
I'm calling this one A Walk in the Woods.
Gorgeous rich shott cottons with just a few dappled batiks to give a sense of shade.
This has joined the queue for quilting at Mandy Parks' The Quilts Whiskers. Which is a shame as I hoped to have it as another sample for the class I'm teaching at Fleggburgh on Saturday... Oh well a photo will have to suffice.

The binding's on!

Getting things finished is always a problem, but I got the binding done on this quilt today, just have to stitch the sleeve on and label it!
The binding was all done by machine, stitched to the back of the quilt and then turned to the front and stitched along the fold to secure it. I used five similar jelly roll strips but trimmed them to 2" and joined on the bias. Nice and quick and perfectly adequate as I am not planning to enter it into any competitions.

This is my Serpentine Curves quilt which I have shown before. It has been quilted with a raindrops pattern designed and quilted by Mandy Parks.
 
It will be my sample for the class I am teaching in September.




Here are pictures of my two quilts that live in the villa in Spain. (Two more to add to the tally..)

 This one is a bordered four-patch and can be made with jelly-roll strips.

It is quilted with an all-over pattern of dragonflies.

The second is a rail fence and quilted with a pattern of sailing boats, both done by Judith Fells. They finish to about 52" square.
It was so hot in Spain that we had them on the bed with just a sheet and dispensed with the duvet!

Another Top Done Two!

Here is my Serpentine Curves top together at last. I've been working on this for a while. It is more difficult than I thought getting the blocks together as there are issues with which way the turnings need to be pressed so that they nest and make a flatter top; and the edges of the block are stretchy...

I have turned it round and quite like it this way up.
I thought I was making a rectangular quilt but hey ho! it turned out square again.. weird that I always seem to be making square quilts. The blocks are about 7" so now I need to decide: Do I need it any bigger? are borders needed?

I've also had a play with my winning fabrics Houses Drift. These are softly coloured, what is sometimes known among Modern quilters as Low Volume fabrics. I cut some 5" squares and made half square triangles and made about a dozen different arrangements. I added in some soft pink hand dye and this is the arrangement I like best:

Here is Ruth's quilt, she has said I can show it, it should help my thinking as to the direction I want mine to go in. I bought another piece of batik today to add some sparkle to my Serpentine Curves Quilt, or maybe just add to my boxful!

Meanderings, by Ruth

Meanderings is an apt name!
I've got a long way to go before mine is this big, but as before I love Ruth's colour combinations and unusual fabrics - lots of stripes in here.

I had an excellent day at April's house printing fabrics, a follow-up to last Wednesday when I went on a course  with Yvonne Brown, printing with thermofax screens. I used Decolourant discharge with screens for the first time and got some interesting results.
I'll add some pictures later.

Crosses and Serpentine Curves

I've sewn the 16 Rattlesnake blocks together so the design wall is now housing my Serpentine Curves blocks - I want to look at them for a bit, and make some more before I decide how I want to set them.
